Rep. Lauren Underwood | Illinois’ 14th District | 2018
Congresswoman Lauren Underwood beat a four-term Republican incumbent in 2018, becoming the first woman, person of color, and young adult to serve the district and the youngest black woman ever to be elected to Congress. She brings a critical perspective to Washington as a registered nurse and healthcare expert, and has proven herself to be an effective leader: she has authored dozens of pieces of legislation, passed 12 through the House, and had 2 signed into law, all in her first year in Congress. Prior to her election, Congresswoman Underwood spent her career implementing the ACA and was appointed by President Obama to serve as a Senior Advisor at the Department of Health and Human Services, where she helped communities prevent, prepare for, and respond to disasters, bio-terror threats, and public health emergencies. Currently, Rep. Underwood is Co-Chair of the House Democratic Policy and Communications Committee and serves on the House Committee on Appropriations.
